London Coal Chute Covers

Only in the past couple of decades has London begun rely on sources of energy other than coal for heat. Wealthier homes of the 19th and 20th centuries had their coal delivered via “coal chutes” down to basement level storage areas. Coal is mostly banned from use now, but the cast iron covers for these chutes remain embedded in the York stone pavements throughout the city.
